Dothan Surgeon Implants HeRO Device for Dialysis PatientsDialysis requires frequent access to a person’s veins in order to circulate the
blood to cleanse the liquids and waste that normally would be removed by
working kidneys.
Jeffrey Whitehurst, M.D., Surgeon, of General and Vascular Surgeons, Dothan, has been implanting the HeRO device into access-challenged dialysis patients for more than 8 months now.

Hemosphere, Inc., Closes $9.3 Million Financing - Kaiser Permanente Ventures is Lead Investor, March 2010
Hemosphere,
Inc., a private medical device company, has completed a late round of
venture capital financing totaling $9.3 million. The company has
developed the HeRO Vascular Access Device, which provides access for
hemodialysis - the process of filtering waste products from blood when
kidneys are in renal failure - similar to a conventional graft. The
device is surgically implanted completely under the skin: its
innovative design bypasses central venous damage caused by catheters.
The HeRO device significantly reduces the risk of catheter related
bacteremia, a potentially fatal infection. Kaiser Permanente Ventures,
Oakland, Calif., is lead investor, and Mutual Capital Partners,
Cleveland, is the second largest new investor. Press Release

Celebrating 1000 HeRO Access Patients! February 2010One thousand end stage renal disease patients have now benefited from a novel device that provides vital access to their blood for filtering and replacement kidney function and reduces the risk of potentially fatal bacteremia infection. More than 1,000 patients in over 220 hospitals across the United States have received the HeRO device since its commercialization in May 2008. Press Release
ASDIN Features Two HeRO Poster Presentations and a Place at the Podium, February 2010
Drs. James Lin, George Nassar, and John Ross shared their clinical experiences at ASDIN in Orlando, FL in mid-February. Dr. Lin shared his experience referring a failing fistula to a HeRO access surgeon resulting in fistula salvage and a new long-term access for his patient. Dr. Nassar compared HeRO patency to literature supported patency rates. And Dr. Ross presented from the podium discussing HeRO within the algorithm of care for end-stage renal disease patients. For more information, view the posters in their entirety on the Presentations page. HeRO Makes Its Way to the ASN Meeting, American Society of Nephrology, October 2009
Jack Work, MD, Interventional Nephrology, Emory University and Lesley Dinwiddie, MSN, Vascular Access Educator, presented a clinical review of 75 post-market evaluations of HeRO Vascular Access Device implants. The poster presentation summary concluded that HeRO offers catheter-dependent patients improved patency, adequacy of dialysis, Hgb, and bacteremia rates versus long term-catheters. Implant success is high in patients who present with challenging vascular pathology.
Poster Presentation at ISHD in Hong Kong, August 2009
Lesley Dinwiddie, MSN, RN, FNP, CNN recently presented the poster: "HeRO™ An Innovative Arterio-Venous Access for Catheter-Dependent Patients" at the second International Society for Hemodialysis Meeting, Hong Kong, in August of 2009. This year's ISHD meeting was attended by nephrologists and nephrology nurses from all over the world. In addition to an excellent program of presentations over 200 abstracts were featured in poster presentations. Highlights of the meeting included a focus on home hemodialysis and a special presentation on the international nephrology response to the victims of the 2008 earthquake in China who suffered acute kidney damage.
2009 FDA Clearance ReceivedHemosphere received FDA market clearance for the new and improved HeRO Vascular Access Device on July 31, 2009. The HeRO device is intended for use in maintaining long-term vascular access for chronic hemodialysis patients who have exhausted peripheral venous access sites suitable for fistulas and grafts. 2008 Was a Big Year for Patients Who Needed a HeROFor Hemosphere, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN), inventor of the HeRO Vascular Access Device, and over 125 “access-challenged” hemodialysis patients, 2008 was a significant year. The company received FDA clearance for the HeRO Device in late January and began commercial shipments at the end of April. Results from the multi-center trial completed in 2007 demonstrated a significant reduction in bacteremia infection rates and improved quality of dialysis for patients dialyzing via the HeRO Device compared to tunneled dialysis catheters (TDCs). These findings are good news for the rapidly growing pool of more than 100,000 patients who rely on hemodialysis to survive and have become dependent on a catheter, the least favorable mode of hemodialysis access, which puts them at increased risk for a life-threatening infection. Original FDA Clearance ReceivedHemosphere received its original FDA market clearance for the HeRO Vascular Access Device on January 30th, 2008. The HeRO device is intended for use in maintaining long-term vascular access for chronic hemodialysis patients who have exhausted peripheral venous access sites suitable for fistulas and grafts. GRAFTcath Becomes HemosphereGRAFTcath changed its name to Hemosphere, Inc. in preparation for the market launch of the HeRO device in 2008. The "hemo" in the Hemosphere name communicates our intent to become a leading provider of innovative technologies that solve significant problems for hemodialysis patients. The "sphere" conveys a sense of encompassing many solutions and embracing the patients and providers we serve. The tagline "Restoring Lives, Revolutionizing Care" distills our company mission into a simple, 4-word statement - at Hemosphere, we are committed to restoring the lives of patients whose health and lifestyle have been severely compromised. Our goal is to revolutionize the healthcare system by improving outcomes, cutting costs and saving lives that would otherwise be lost.
